Knowing how to make sound financial decisions everyday is an important life skill. However, most people fail to build and enhance this skill. To be honest, I was one of them—having my fair share of mismanaging money—from investing in wrong places, splurging, or purchasing things on impulse. Until that all changed. How to achieve financial freedom for starters? First let me give you a global picture.

Financial Literacy, a Local and Global Concern

According to Canada’s Task Force on Financial Literacy, only half of the total Canadian adults had a budget; 30% were struggling to meet their bills; of those planning to buy a home 48% had saved less than five percent of the cost of the home; and only 40% had a good idea of how much money they needed to save in order to maintain their desired standard of living in retirement.

Globally, the level of financial literacy among young adults and adults alike is low in most countries, reports the Financial Planet. In Japan, for instance, 71% of adults surveyed knew nothing about investment in equities and bonds. In the US and Korea, high school students who were part of a survey failed a test designed to gauge their ability to select and manage a credit card or prepare for retirement. In Australia, 67% of those who were surveyed claimed to understand what compound interest means, but only 28% know how to find a correct answer to a problem using the concept.

Thank God for Financial Teachers!

The numbers can go on and on. Personally, I believe every person on this planet who are earning money should know how to manage it well, and make it work for them in the long run. That is why lessons on how to achieve financial freedom for starters are important.

Good thing there are financial teachers out there whose mission is to spread financial literacy. Financial teachers like Robert Kiyosaki and his wife Kim are two of my favorites. And boy, I am just so glad to have learned from them. It was a golden moment too when I met one of their best disciples, Canada’s Rich Dad and businessman Darren Weeks.

Darren Weeks with me in a Vancouver Financial Literacy Conference

Financial Literacy for Starters

Since I’ve sold my business and my husband retired from his 9-to-5 job in 2006, we have been on the lookout on ways that will make our money work hard for us. At the heart of this quest, my motivation is to make a difference in the life of others.

The formula on how to achieve financial freedom for starters is simple, according to Darren. “Have a goal, get a good financial education, take action.” People underscore the value of taking each little step, according to Weeks. He said that it is in the little, everyday step that bigger goals can be achieved. And just like in managing money wisely, everyone needs to start to be educated first, like learning how to read and write.

Weeks said that if you want to start a business on your own and earn money, do things for free at first—in exchange for valuable learnings. It’s what you learn that is important, he said. And while learning, Darren Weeks stressed the importance of making things happen.

Click on the video below to watch Mr. Weeks as he shares powerful insights on financial literacy:

Meet Darren Weeks: The Man Who Started Investing Since Elementary School

Darren Weeks is founder of the Fast Track Group, a financial education and investment company that teaches Canadians to become financially fit. He grew up in a middle class family and put himself through university, finishing a degree in accounting. Darren started investing in mutual funds and penny stocks since elementary school, moved to precious metals in high school and became a multi-property real estate investor while at the University.

His life purpose? “Financial independence feels great. My life’s purpose is to help my fellow Canadians share this wonderful feeling and know they achieved this powerful status by taking charge of their financial future and counting on themselves,” he said.

Make Money Work For You

How to achieve financial freedom for starters will take time and focus. If you want to make your money work for you instead of working for it all your life and every waking hours, take these three basic steps:

Start learning about financial literacy.

Get a good financial educator that you can trust.

Plan out how you will save your money. In general, whenever you get your paycheck, set aside 20% for savings, 20% for investment and use the other 20% for your expenses. The first one is mandatory.

Financial education will help you live the life of your dreams and help people around you!

Ready to make your dreams happen? Go!

I always love to hear from you. Please share your thoughts and pass this on so we can continue to share the love and lessons to many others more! Stay tuned for more practical lessons how to achieve financial freedom for starters.

The great Abraham Lincoln once said of his mother, “All that I am, or hope to be, I owe to my angel mother.” Many of the great leaders and change makers in this world were raised by mothers—biological or otherwise—who had the strongest conviction to raise their children in the best way possible, no matter the circumstances. Reason why mothers are powerful, I believe, is because they can change the world one child at a time.

One of these mothers were Ida Stover. Born in a poor family, Ida loved to study and took on domestic jobs to finish high school. In fact, she was so smart that she won a prize for memorizing 1,365 Bible verses. She also taught children so she can earn enough money to get her into college. Known as a “firm but gentle disciplinarian”, Ida raised the 34th president of the United States of America Dwight David Eisenhower who said of her, “Many such persons of her faith, selflessness, and boundless consideration of others have been called saintly. She was that—but above all she was a worker, an administrator, a teacher and guide, a truly wonderful woman.”

Mary Litogot was a very diligent and self-sufficient worker. Her work ethics were emulated by his son, American industrialist and founder of the Ford Motors Company, Henry Ford who “attributed his clean factories to her belief in cleanliness.” Mary was Henry Ford’s greatest fan who encouraged his love for building machines. The industrialist said, “I have tried to live my life as my mother would have wished. I believe I have done, as far as I could, just what she hoped for me.”

In the Philippines, there was a mother of 11 who cared for her children and taught them to study very well. Teodora Alonzo nurtured her children’s passion for learning and love for their country. One of them would grow up to be a national hero—Dr. Jose P. Rizal who inspired millions of Filipinos in fighting for the country’s independence and ending over 300 years of Spanish rule.

In this same country, a mother who lived in a small hut made of bamboo would wake up early to prepare food for her 12 children. During the day, she would sell all kinds of merchandise to earn money. Despite the hardships, she was able to send her 12 children to school. She was my mother, my inay who taught me the values of industry, hard work, patience and perseverance.

Beyond the Routine Lies the Core Power of Mothers

I am reminded of a song by Martina MacBride “In My Daughter’s Eyes” which goes: “In my daughter’s eyes, I am a hero, I am strong and wise, And I know no fear.” It just says it all—why mothers are powerful rests on their ability to nurture, care, encourage, uplift, build up, and inspire their children into becoming the best that they can be.

When I was a young mother of two small children, the routine and challenges of mothering had a way of pulling my spirits down. Washing the dishes and clothes, cooking, working at the same time, pacifying tantrums and crying fits, caring for children round the clock—all these can sap my energy!

At times, self-pity, boredom, self-depreciation, and envy (for other mothers who I think had it better) will sit in. However, when I think hard about it enough—my children reminded me that I am their biggest rescuer, their safety and security, their comfort and love. That my friends, is the core of it all, the reason why mothers are powerful. God designed and assigned that role to no one but us, mothers.

Now my children are all grown up, fine young ladies pursuing their dreams and passion. My heart will always belong to them. Though my nest is empty, I’ll be like the great female hawk ready to answer their call and fly when necessary.

Let this be a gentle cue and refresher to all young and old mothers out there. The reason why mothers are powerful is because motherhood is an age-old magnificence, a splendor that built this world, a brilliance that brought to life world great leaders and ordinary individuals doing extraordinary things.

The power of a mother is not to be forgotten. It is a treasure this world and all men will forever celebrate and give honor to. Cheers to being a mom, momma, nanay, mama, okaasan, mere, ema, uh muni, or ibu.

(Information about Henry Ford, Dwight David Eisenhower and their mothers were derived from: ”Mothers: 100 Mothers of the Famous and Infamous,” by Richard Ehrlich.)

Three Mother’s Days ago, Tom, my adopted son from Seoul, Korea gave me these gifts: a dish cloth, needles, threads, sun glasses and a candle. These were the perfect gifts for Mother’s Day.

Perfect gifts for Mother’s Day

What do they mean to me? What do they symbolized? Here’s how he explained it through a very loving letter that accompanied these gifts:

Dear Jhet,

These objects in the box symbolize variety of characteristics that you have given me and to others. I am going to explain each of the objects to you.

Dish cloth is for care.

First of all the “dish cloth” symbolizes your caring for me for the past four years. You’ve always did your best to keep me safe and away from bad influences. Just like the cloth which sometimes sanitizes house wares in the kitchen. I believe you are my personal best cloth of caring which kept me clean and away from bad influences. Thanks for your care.

Needle is for necessary toughness.

Secondly, the “needle” represents your toughness. Although they are small and skinny, the needles can make beautiful textiles for people to see, wear and enjoy. Despite your small physical appearance, you are very inspirational figure. What lies within you is magnificent and astonishing.

Thank you for your tough ambition.

Thread is for a creative and motivating mind.

Thirdly, the “colorful threads” remind me of your creative and motivating mind. I remember you as one of my inspirational figures. Just like when the threads are gathered together, they present as a colourful garment.

The threads’ hidden potential tells me that in reality, everyone has their own talent, which just needs to be found and sewn together. If there is a strong confidence and belief, there would be no doubt that each and every one of us can become great.

Thank you for your generosity to share your colorful mind.

Sunglasses is for vision.

The symbol of the “sunglasses” has been shared by you to millions of others around the world. The sun glasses symbolizes the vision which you have encouraged to others. Because of you numerous people are saved and inspired to find their vision and God given talents. Thank you for your inspiration.

Lastly, the “pink candle”, which has a scent of a rose. This symbolizes your love. Your love has always been helpful, and one of cheerful harmonies in our house. I cannot possibly describe your love because… (at this point it was the edge of the card – hes got his own sense of humor) no more space to write.. ) Thank you Jhet.

The card he wrote ended with:

Mom this comes with special thoughts, with love and wishes too…for everything to make your day especially nice for you. HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY!

Surely these items were simple and can be bought at any dollar store. Yet, it moved me and my heart to tears. They were the perfect gifts for Mother’s Day.

Who is Tom?

Tom is from Seoul, Korea. He is the only son to his biological parents Patrick and Jane. He lived with us since he was 12 years old and left for University in Toronto, Canada at age 19. Tom spent his teenage formative years in our home and became a brother to daughters Michelle and Catherine. We became really great friends with his parents. We visited them in Korea numerous times throughout the years and his parents spent three Christmases with us in Canada as one family. He visited us in the Philippines including a trip to Pader, Lian, Batangas—the barrio where I was born. Tom moved on to study at the University of Toronto. He recently went back to Seoul, Korea to serve in the (mandatory) Army service for two years.

Before these perfect gifts for Mother’s Day came about, I was not so sure how I’m making an impact on Tom’s life. I treated him as a real member of our family—a son that I never had. I gave him tough love, I treated him as if he is my son, put him to work and was asked to contribute to household chores. Oh yeah, he received his dozes of discipline. I thought that he can’t wait to get back home because he has not much of a freedom with us. Until I received this message from his heart.

Tom filled my family’s life with meaning and purpose. He was with us total of seven years. Deep in my heart he will make his own impact as a leader in his chosen field.

I love you son, our superman. Keep soaring like a SUPERMAN you are!

Superman Tom, with Catherine and Michelle

If you own or read a copy of the book I’ve written THE TALE OF JULIET – You Have The Power To Change Your LIfe, Tom is the one in the picture with Michelle and Catherine dressed up as SUPERMAN. Oh how time flies!

I touched down Vancouver Airport after an amazing holiday in Spain and Rome—my appetite for ancient histories and new discoveries satisfied and full. Rome especially moved my heart when I found myself in a crowd cheering for Pope Francis.

After picking up my luggage, the airport TV screens showed the shocking news of the Boston Marathon explosion. Passengers stood there in silence, mulling at the sight of an unreal pandemonium. My heart was beating fast as I saw flashes of victims, people running for their lives, and those running to give help.

Photo courtesy of New York Times.

My tired eyes let go of tears. I could just imagine the overwhelming sadness and terror that swept the victims and their families. In my heart, I was there, feeling their grief.

The Boston Marathon is considered as the world’s oldest annual marathon, since its start in 1897. It attracts over 500,000 spectators and 30,000 runners each year representing different countries—making it one of the world’s best road racing events.

Who could conceive to destroy this noble race that only seeks camaraderie among its participants? Whoever he or they may be—the suspected 19-year old lad and his brother—they may have sent terror but they failed to bring down the unwavering hope and spirit of the Boston Marathon runners, their friends and families, and the marathon supporters.

US President Barack Obama said it well. In his speech at the aftermath of the Boston Marathon explosion, he said, “…a bomb can’t beat us. That’s why we don’t hunker down.”

Quoting Dick Hoyt, the Iron Man runner who has pushed his disabled son Rick in over 30 Boston Marathons, Obama added, “we can’t let something like this stop us. This doesn’t stop us. That’s what you’ve [Boston] reminded us, to push on, to persevere, to not grow weary, to not get faint even when it hurts.”

Diamonds in the Dust

Boston shone brightly in the midst of tragedy and President Obama praised the city and its people for their resilience, strength and selfless love.

“You showed us, Boston, that in the face of evil, Americans will lift up what’s good. In the face of cruelty, we will choose compassion. In the face of those who would visit death upon innocents, we will choose to save and to comfort and to heal. We’ll choose friendship. We’ll choose love. Because Scripture teaches us God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love and self-discipline,” he said.

Admiring all those who were part of the rescue team, President Obama exalted the discipline and selfless love displayed by all doctors, nurses, police, firefighters, guardsmen and brave civilians who ran towards explosions to treat and help the wounded. “When Bostonians carry victims in their arms, deliver water and blankets, line up to give blood, open their homes to total strangers, give them rides back to reunite with their families, that’s love.”

Finishing the Race, No Matter the Circumstances

“Even when our heart aches, we summon the strength that maybe we didn’t even know we had, and we carry on; we finish the race,” Obama said.

Despite the tragic end of this year’s Boston Marathon, the runners’ endurance and faith still stand. Obama is positive that next year will be an even better race. “And this time next year on the third Monday of April, the world will return to this great American city to run harder than ever and to cheer even louder for the 118th Boston Marathon. Bet on it,” Obama noted.

“We carry on. We race. We strive. We build and we work and we love and we raise our kids to do the same.”

In closing, Obama delivered a speech that moved his audience in tears, his voice trembling. “Tomorrow the sun will rise over Boston. Tomorrow the sun will rise over this country that we love, this special place, this state of grace. Scripture tells us to run with endurance the race that is set before us. As we do, may God hold close those who’ve been taken from us too soon, may He comfort their families and may He continue to watch over the United States of America.”

Three years ago, I visited Argentina on its 200th year celebration of independence. I was a solo wanderer in a country that is rich in culture and its people—beautiful, patriotic and romantic. The joy that I found in all the Argentineans I met were infectious. This year, I am sure they have more reasons to be jubilant, as one of their own became one of the most influential people in the world.

Photo of Pope Francis courtesy of www.guardian.co.uk

After the white smoke emerged from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel at the Vatican, former cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio who chose the name Pope Francis, emerged to the glorious cheer of the crowd. He is now the leader of all Catholics across the globe. What could be the reason he was selected by his peers? Who is Pope Francis and what makes him special?

Robust Reformer

Known as a straightshooter and reformer, Pope Francis is the first pope from Latin America. As if signalling his programs for the church, he chose the name Francis, the first time in history—after St. Francis of Assisi, a wealthy Italian merchant who chose the life of poverty to minister to sick and poor people. Instead of blessing the crowd in his first appearance as a pope, he asked the crowd to pray for him and his leadership—straying from the usual practice.

To me, Pope Francis looks like a football player, with his strong and robust physique. You wouldn’t think he’s only breathing on one lung for almost half a century, after it was removed due to an infection. And yet, this pope has a track record of advocating continuous improvement in the church and in bringing the Gospel out in the streets.

Simple Servant

According to CNN, Pope Francis is the first Jesuit pope to sit in the Vatican. Jesuit priests are members of the Society of Jesus, a male religious order of Catholic priests who are dedicated to evangelization and are willing to live at the most extreme conditions. True to his order, Pope Francis is a congenial priest to people from all walks of life.

At 76, he would commute from his simple apartment home to his diocese, when he could have accepted a service vehicle and live on a big house. In fact, Reuters news agency reported that after his first appearance as pope, Pope Francis skipped the limousine and rode on a shuttle bus on his way to his Vatican residence.

Credible and Caring Care-giver

In Argentina, Pope Francis has been seen washing the feet of patients with HIV and AIDS (acquired immune-deficiency syndrome), defending single mothers from priests who refused to baptize their child, and looking out after the victims of social injustices.

Pope Francis is also known to encourage his fellow priests to go out in the streets, visit people, and persuade them to attend masses. He brings the true Gospel of Christ in its original form. Credibility, authenticity and simplicity—all these virtues make Pope Francis special.

My Prayer for the Pope

My prayer is that he will make significant changes in the church, which is now challenged by cases of corruption and abuse. With his lifetime dedication to spreading the Word and love of God, I am sure he will accomplish much in his term.

To dear Pope Francis, I dedicate this prayer to you, from the saint himself whom you were inspired to follow:

Prayer of Saint Francis of Assisi

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury,pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
and where there is sadness, joy.
O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console;
to be understood as to understand; to be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive;
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

The post-second-world-war hardships of life in the province hindered her from reaching her dreams as a child. And yet, she found her happiness in one of life’s greatest professions—as a mother of 12 loving children she raised with her husband in a small bamboo house they built, along with their new-found dreams.

Hands together as a couple, they worked day and night for the family. He, working as a driver, and she, multitasking as a fruit and vegetable seller while planting her own produce, and offering haircurling and cutting services from one home to another. Notwithstanding the heat of the sun, the pain that her back suffered from carrying baskets full of vegetables and fruits, the tiresome hairdressing work that she puts in her hands, she did all these so her children’s stomachs will not growl at night. At home, she also taught her older children how to sell goods to earn extra money after school classes were over.

An amazing woman in her farm in Batangas, Philippines.

In the years that would come, the virtues of diligence, industry, hard work and patience that she instilled in her children will bore the fruits of a better life—of abundance and fulfilled dreams.

On the other side of the world, a smart, beautiful and athletic young woman has packed her bags and got on a plane. At 19, she bravely left home for the first time to a country poorer by financial standards compared to where she grew up in. She decided to do this so that she can have the opportunity to learn first-hand from local businessmen and sought-after speakers. In exchange, she would be 8,000 miles away from home, constantly adapting to a new culture, and missing all the family gatherings, the comfort of her own home as well as time spent with childhood friends. She trains professionally and gets extra financial boost as a TV celebrity and event host. Tall, lithe and tanned, she joins shows and events that test her physical and mental strength—from marathons, obstacle races, hiking and trekking, and even TV game shows.

On right is an amazing woman on the set of a TV game show.

While living a free-spirited and solo life in the city, this young woman has established a good circle of friends and has grounded herself in the church where she gets her spiritual nourishment and guidance.

These are the tales of two wise women I know. These two women are half-a-century years apart, but they share two things in common: me, and overwhelming inner strength. They are my mother whom I call Inay, and my eldest daughter, Mish. I am simply thankful for having them both in my life.

My mother, though I at times misunderstood her when I was a child, taught me the invaluable virtue of hard work that helped me move my life from being a street vendor to an entrepreneur and an author. Her eyes exude strength, her hands pliability. She was my statue of productivity and wise time management.

My daughter Mish hops between Canada and the Philippines, learning as much as she can from the opportunities that come her way. Even though busy with sales, real estate investing, and her celebrity stints, she always lifts me up with her encouraging words and prayers. When I get myself trapped in panic and agitation, she is the soft voice that would remind me to calm down and maintain my inner peace. She was my baby who charmed and lifted my spirits from the first time I saw her, and has never failed to do so even unto this day. She and her sister Catherine, also my equally smart and modelesque daughter, are the miracles of my life.

This Women’s Month, I celebrate every woman, young and old. History saw our strength tested, and yet we have always emerged and overcome hardships with resilience. Our eyes may well up in tears during the toughest times, our hands and knees shiver, but our hearts never falter.

If you’re one of us, say these words out loud, “I’m proud to be a wise woman!”

And if you’re a man, cherish the amazing wise women that God has placed in your life – your mother, wife, daughters, fiance or partner.

You are blessed to have them!

Happy International Women’s Month!

What a year! Exactly a year ago, I celebrated New Year’s Eve with my family at home in Canada, packed up my things off to California the next day where I’d be taking a connecting flight to Australia, and then got on board a cruise to the South Pacific. My exciting start of 2012 spelled out the rest of the year as I traveled around the world, met great people, enjoyed new experiences, and learned new things.

With my bucket of gratitude already full, I am looking back at the year 2012 and writing with joy, while I sit looking at the awe-inspiring Holy City of Jerusalem where my husband and I said hello to 2013. No end of the world, only great lessons learned and wishes fulfilled in 2012.

Touring Israel on my birthday. Awesome! Photo on left: The sign that indicates the place where Jesus was born. Right: Standing at the top of Mount Olives where I was given this wonderful view of Jerusalem.

Lesson Learned #1: Speak out what you want to see.

“Be at Peace. Trust that we come from God. Our reality is divine.” – Dr. Wayne Dyer

As I was saying, I got on board the gigantic Holland America Volendam to attend a 14-day conference that featured the very famous Dr. Wayne Dyer as main speaker. It was also a birthday treat for myself—and boy, it was! Apart from the very high-impact seminars, there were pool parties, cocktails, opportunities to socialize and network, and I even got a birthday card, chocolates, and balloons courtesy of the ship captain! What’s best, I was in the company of like-minded people as well as giants of Hay House Publishing including CEO Tracy Reid and Best Selling Author Cheryl Richardson.

Dr. Wayne said that the key to manifesting our wishes fulfilled is to feel and trust in our divine connection. We can develop this ability to trust even though there is no physical evidence yet. No matter what circumstances or obstacles we are currently experiencing, hang on tight to what you really want to be, do and have and the path will be shown to us.

Chillax after the seminar. Ooops, I think Dr. Wayne Dyer’s eyes smiled so much here!

To program our selves the way we wanted to live, we are to say what our life should be in an affirming statement. This means we are to pretend we already are what we truly want, what we want to be, and what we want to have by saying you already are.

And so mine was:

“I am healthy, I am happy, I am love, I am loved, I am grateful, I am spirit lifter, I am abundant, I am an open learner, I am the best mom, I am the best wife, I am the best daughter, I am the best sister, I am in a loving relationship, I am a successful entrepreneur, I am traveling the world, I am making a difference.”

Sounded like a tall order for me, right? So throughout the year, when things do not go my way, I anchored myself to Wayne Dyer’s teachings. Fast forward. As I write 2012 in review I am in awe on the fact that I experienced most of the above. I might not be always 100% there, it’s a process, but amazingly this “I am” statements works!

Lesson Learned #2: When things go wrong as it sometimes will, rest if you must but don’t you quit.

“Flaming enthusiasm, backed up by horse sense and persistence, is the quality that most frequently makes for success.” – Dale Carnegie

During our winter holiday in Whistler Blackcomb in British Columbia, Canada, I made sure I refreshed whatever I know about snowboarding by going to the slopes and making my way down on a snowboard. On the second day, I had a little accident (or maybe it was an opportunity). While getting off the chair lift, I slipped and hurt my tail bone. Snowboarding during learning stage is not an easy feat. With a sore behind, I cannot afford to fall anymore.

Instead of pushing my luck, I spent time at the resort’s cozy library and a sweet staff provided me with warm blanket, turned the fireplace on, and there I was, all cuddled up. I caught up with my reading Wishes Fulfilled book of Dr. Wayne Dyer. In that moment, I was able to savour on the beauty that is around me—through the glass window the snow kept on falling, the cloud-capped mountain, the tall trees, the white blanket of snow—my eyes is feasting and my soul was happy and grateful.

I did not quit snowboarding by the way, I still took my lessons when I was feeling better and learned how to go down the slope on snowboard!

Lesson Learned #3: Use your talents.

You have to think anyway, so why not THINK BIG? – Donald Trump

Early spring, I heard about the National Achiever’s Congress to be held in San Jose, California, USA and some big guys will be there like Donald Trump, Robert and Kim Kiyosaki, Tony Robins and T.Harv Eker among many more. While I was not so crazy about Donald Trump, that all changed after hearing him delivered such an inspiring message that made me realize this very rich, successful, and power-driven man is one of us too. He was a man with good spirit and soul who made use of his natural talents. He said, “I try to learn from the past, but I plan for the future by focusing exclusively in the present. That’s where the fun is.” In short he is saying “live in the moment” for tomorrow may never come. Cool guy. His hair too.

Left photo, top and bottom) Me with fellow attendees at the 2012 Tony Robbins’ “Unleash the Power Within” Conference in San Jose, California. (Right photo) Oprah Winfrey walking on burning coals and being coached by Tony Robbins at last year’s event.

Lesson Learned #4: Accept that there will be hardships, and that you can overcome.

It is in the moment of decision that your destiny is shaped. – Tony Robbins

I went back to San Jose California few months after National Achievers Congress and attended “Unleash the Power Within” led by celebrity life coach Tony Robbins. It was my fourth firewalking experience—oh yes I did walked on fire! My lesson on that? Life is like firewalking, the trail ahead may be burning, we sometimes find ourself afraid and trembling. But with enough courage and strong will, our feet can trample and walk through the heat. And while we may not literally walk on fire, with firm belief on our God-given talents, and complete trust, nothing is impossible to overcome. Do you agree?

Lesson Learned #5: Education and action will change your life.

There are no limits, no ceilings, glass or otherwise, for women in the world of investing.—Kim Kiyosaki

As an open learner, I am proud to say I am a follower and coaching student of Robert and Kim Kiyosaki. (Click here to read my blog entry on financial literacy.) This year is totally different and am grateful when my husband Ted came fully on board with me in increasing our financial literacy. As part to of continuing education we saw ourselves taking more real estate courses on creative real estate investing both in USA, Vancouver, Winnipeg and Toronto, Canada.

Because of our continued learning, we are now better equipped to qualify investments that come to our lap. We have been burned in the past, failed investments and losses. We learned from it and moved forward. You heard the saying “No Risk No Gain”? We were two times in Las Vegas to investigate on some real estate opportunities and fortunately we met some people along the way whom we considered are God-send! And this and other investment opportunities will surely keep us busy this new year.

And now for the wishes fulfilled!

Wish Fulfilled #1: Realized a 25-year old dream

“A happy family is but an earlier heaven.”—George Bernard Shaw

This year marked our 25th year wedding anniversary. For those of you who are familiar with The Tale of Juliet, Ted and I had our honeymoon in Kenya. I was in awe when I saw the animals living in their natural habitat and it crossed my mind that if ever we have children, I would love for them to experience a trip to the African wilderness.

Posing with my husband and two daughters at Table Top Mountain in South Africa.

Life happens, life was good, but challenges in our marriage took its toll over the years that we almost did not make it. Fortunately we came back to earth and saw the road blocks as an opportunity to re-connect with our marriage vows. A dream-come-true that our family made it to South Africa last April. We had our family safari, hiked the Table Top mountain, went wine tasting—although I never learned how to drink, but I love the cheese, grapes and crackers that comes along with it, went to Robben Island where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned, and enjoyed the long drive along the coast of South Africa up to where Indian Ocean meets the Atlantic Ocean. Most of all, aside from experiencing South African culture, we are richer with our new found friends too.

Wish Fulfilled #2: Seeing my daughters’ dreams being fulfilled

“Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but when dreams come true, there is life and joy.” —Proverbs 13:12

We are fortunate to be with our daughter Mish on her 24th birthday in the Philippines. She introduced us to her Victory Church friends and the friends that were part of her life in my home country in the last three years. We are also proud of her participation in the TV show, The Amazing Race, Philippines. What a feeling it was to watch her and her team doing the challenges. We were in South Africa family vacation when she was called for the final audition. It’s a pity she had to cut her holiday with us short but she was excited to give it her best and thank God she made it to the team.

Upon returning from a six-week trip in Guam and Philippines, Ted and I got invited by our daughter Catherine and her boyfriend Cam for dinner. It was simply a mother’s delight to be served delicious and home cooked meal prepared by her daughter. And to see her in love with and being taken care of by a respectable man, that was one thing I’m so grateful for.

Oh my precious children, they have so many dreams and it’s a wonder to see them being fulfilled one day at a time. I am so proud of them!

In photo from left: Mish and her partner Dani; Ted with Catherine, Cam and sweet dog Frankie.

Wish Fulfilled #3: Reconnected with family

“Cherish your human connections – your relationships with friends and family.” – Barbara Bush

After visiting my mother in the Philippines, I also took the time to fly to Guam to visit my father and three brothers. Here, I was able to roll up my sleeves and do some serious work in the garden that used to be my parents’, and enjoy food and some swimming. It was nice to connect with my family. My father, who is also an American citizen, still longs to stay in the Philippines. He plans to come home for good and join my 76 years old mother.

The person my father misses the most, my mom. I call her “inay” which means mother in Filipino. She’s shown here in her garden in Batangas, Philippines.

Some parts of this entry were written in front of a wood burning fireplace, in my brother’s in law’s home while Ted and I were in Holland. During our stay, we were able to meet much of Ted’s nephews, nieces, cousins, friends and relatives. Families are wonderful gifts to us, isn’t it?

Wish Fulfilled #4: Continue to inspire others

” Don’t judge each day by the harvest you reap but by the seeds that you plant.” – Robert Louis Stevenson

While in the Philippines, I had an opportunity to share my story to a group through an invitation from a friend Jay McLean who is also a best-selling author and business adviser. I spoke to a young group learning how to market their business through Facebook. Such energy, such passion, it was great to be in their company!

Grateful to have been invited to shared my story with his seminar attendees. With Filipino-Australian Business Adviser, Author and Speaker Jay McLean.

Wish Fulfilled #5: A love made stronger

” One of the nicest things you can say to your partner, “If I had it to do over again, I’d choose you. Again.” —Unknown

When my husband Ted and I celebrated our 25th year anniversary this year, I realized that our marriage is no longer on the rocks, but on a road to healing and to becoming stronger. Why do I say this? Ted who is not really into this before, brought a book during our year-end trip, “5 Languages of Love” (thanks to my daughter Mish who gave this as an early Christmas gift to her dad) and he was reading it!

He also surprised me that after Holland we are going to Istanbul, Turkey, and then to Israel. How about celebrating my birthday in the land where Jesus was born? That’s another dream come true!

Each day I am feeling our love is growing stronger, and I thank God for it!

With my forever love, Ted. Thankful to God that our marriage is growing stronger after 25 years.

Wishes fulfilled? Yes indeed!

As Dr. Wayne Dyer says, “Feel the connection, focus on what you have to give, have faith in your dreams, and you will overcome all doubt and make your wishes reality. I can promise you it works for me and will work for you too.”

Happy New Year and may all your heart’s desires be fulfilled in 2013!

What do you want to see happen in your life in the next 365 days?

Speak them now!

World’s top motivational speaker dies at 86

“People often say that motivation doesn’t last. Well, neither does bathing – that’s why we recommend it daily. Your attitude, not your aptitude, will determine your altitude. If you can dream it, then you can achieve it. You will get all you want in life if you help enough other people get what they want. You were born to win, but to be a winner, you must plan to win, prepare to win, and expect to win.”

Remembering Zig Ziglar (Photo courtesy of www.success.com)

We see these quotes almost everywhere—in self-help books, stickers, trainings, posters, even viral videos. These and many more famous quotes are left behind by Zig Ziglar, one of the world’s popular motivational speaker and author of many personal development books, who died at 86 due to pneumonia. While I may not know him personally, I feel the loss of another great mind and God-fearing leader who has inspired so many around the world.

Born in Alabama, USA, Hilary Hinton Ziglar, or Zig Ziglar was the tenth of twelve children. He served in the United States Navy during World War II. As a young officer, he fell in love with a sixteen year old lady, Jean whom he married after the war. To support his wife and three children, Zig Ziglar worked as a salesman in many companies. Apart from selling products, he knew he had more to offer, and these were his energy and presence in the stage. In the 1950s, he started speaking to sales groups before becoming vice president and training director for an automotive performance firm in 1968.

According to William Yardley of The New York Times, Zig Ziglar “reached people through more than two dozen books with total sales well into the millions; through his children, who have helped run his company; through cassette tapes and later podcasts; and of course through his personal presentations. At his busiest, he said, he spoke 150 times a year, and well into his 70s he was speaking 60 times a year. His fee was $50,000 a speech, plus expenses.”

People pay hefty money to see the man speak. And that’s because he was so good at it! The New York Times further reports, “He had a formula: Prepare extensively every time, be funny (“Every seven to nine minutes I’ll have them laughing”), and frequently reinforce the broader message (“I make certain that every five minutes I’m giving them a concept, an idea, a process, a hope builder”).”

Good bye dear Zig Ziglar, and thank you for your inspiring legacy…and not to mention, your motivational quotes!

Have you ever walked on fire? I mean literally? Many of us will cringe at the idea. A small burn is enough to make us whimper in pain, and how much more when we walk through burning coal and ember?

Practiced in many ancient cultures and up until today, walking on fire also called as “firewalk”, is considered a test of bravery, courage and strength—and for many, a test of faith. Firewalk is designed to demonstrate the power of the mind over the body and the situations around us. Fire is a powerful element and when one conquers it, one can conquer many things.

And guess what? I walked on fire—four times already in my life!

It was the ultimate challenge that my mentors, world-renowned motivational speakers T. Harv Eker (author of New York Times Bestseller Secrets of the Millionaire’s Mind) and Tony Robbins (top motivational and celebrity coach) posed to seminar attendees like me. Each time was a different experience filled with excitement, anxiety, a thirst to prove oneself, and more importantly, a challenge to focus one’s mind and soul.

My first firewalk was led by T. Harv Eker in a beautiful, lush green mountainside camp in British Columbia, Canada. Like many firewalk ceremony, one is required to focus his or herself on one personal vision and channel that vision onto the burning coal. I was intent on my goal to inspire many, to make a difference and leave a lasting legacy. I took the first brave step—with my vision in mind, body and spirit—and onto the fire I went, my feet walked through the two-meter long burning trail with temperature reaching up to 800 degrees!

I got to the other side sooner than I expected and was jumping up and down, screaming with joy. Gaining inspiration from this experience and being convinced that I can conquer the impossible, I was able to muster the energy and drive to write my autobiography “The Tale of Juliet” which made it to the Amazon.Com’s 2007 best-seller list!

The second time, my ego took over. Because I’ve done firewalk before, I knew it would be a breeze. With that in mind and my goal and focus taking the backseat, I walked with confidence. Oh the coal kissed my feet! Ouch!

The third time, I was challenged to do better. I was able to spend more time in prayer—we prayed for every one attending and their success. Though fearful of my last experience, I tuned myself to my goal and walked without pain. It was a joyful firewalk finish, I knew I have become stronger inside.

The fourth time was just a few months ago when I attended Tony Robbins seminar “Unleash the Power Within” in San Jose California along with 5000 attendees. Known as coach to America’s most popular celebrities, political, and business figures, Tony Robbins led the powerful four-day seminar with so much vigor and mastery, giving attendees powerful advice on how we can do better with relationships, finances, careers, and life in general. The large conference hall was filled with energy, and all our spirits were high—ready to take on the world. To cap the amazing experience, he gave us ample time to decide and prepare for the firewalk ceremony. You see, anyone has to choice to go walk or back out.

At the firewalk site next to the stadium, about ten 12-foot long trail of hot coals were laid. With his trained staff, Tony led us out in the evening and rallied us to take on the challenge. But I must say that even after doing this three times already, I still got scared. The coals looked even hotter in the dark, and with many spectators around, “What if I get burned? That will be embarrassing!”

While in line I was uttering and focusing on my goals. And yet when I took the first firewalk step, my goal turned into “I hope I don’t get burned!” Thankfully, I got to the other end and was not hurt. I even forgot to celebrate!

Apparently, 21 of my fellow attendees got minor blisters on their feet. But with 5000 attendees, that percentage is quite insignificant. Those who experienced pain were already doing well the next day.

Firewalk or not

I have done four firewalks and each time, I was filled with fear. And yet, somehow I knew that fear is real and the only way to conquer it is to face it. Do it anyway, like they always say! Perhaps this is the best success secret that we can learn, with our without doing a firewalk.

Fear happens, it lingers, but one can take courage to face and overcome it. Focus on the goal, the results, and take the step to go through any fearful situation.

Like a firewalk, the trail ahead may be burning, you find yourself trembling. But with enough courage and strong will, your feet can trample and walk through the heat. You may not literally walk on fire, but with firm belief on our God-given talents, and complete trust in God, nothing is impossible for us to overcome.

May you always be on fire to be at your best!

It’s the London 2012 Olympics and the world is mesmerized again by the impressive show of human strength. Watching the opening ceremony reminded me of the time when I rode an airplane along with a dozen Dutch Olympians. They were all excited to compete at the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary, Canada while I was thrilled to arrive in Canada for the first time, ready to live a new life as an immigrant.

Growing up, I was not able to compete in any athletic sports. But life has a different way of introducing me to the Olympics. My eldest daughter was trained by a track-and-field Olympic coach and she competed in Canada and the US. Lynn Kanuka, a track and field bronze medalist in the 1984 Summer Olympics became a friend and a fan of my book The Tale of Juliet. Early this year, I visited the Olympic Museum in Lausanne, Switzerland, the largest Olympic archive in the world.

Apart from the fact that each Olympic event brings the world together, transcending cultural differences and views, the Olympics has a lesson to tell—that man can push beyond their physical and mental limits to win and achieve even the impossible. What are the lessons we can learn from each Olympic athlete? How can we think and win like an Olympic athlete?

1. Olympic athletes believe in the word “can”

Consider Wilma Rudolph. The 20th of 22 siblings, she was born prematurely and was diagnosed with polio virus at the age of four. A sickly child, she wore a brace on her left leg until the age of nine and suffered from chicken pox, measles, scarlet fever and whooping cough.

Despite all these, she persevered to become a track and field athlete, winning a bronze medal in 1956 and three gold medals in 1960—the first American woman to win three gold medals in a single Olympic Game.

2. Olympic athletes do not let their past define who they are

Lopez Lomong was only six years old when he “started running for his life.” When rebel soldiers killed his parents during the Sudanese Civil War in South Sudan, Lomong suffered intensely from the pain of loss, despair and hopelessness. He had spent a decade in a refugee camp and through a charity’s help, was able to move to the United States at the age of 16.

Now a proud American Citizen, Lomong ran in the 1500 meters race during the 2008 Olympics and finished fifth. Last April 29, 2012, Lomong set a 2012 world record for 5k race, with a time of 13 minutes and 11.63 seconds. He is now part of the American track-and-field team competing at the 2012 Olympic Games. His story inspires African refugees all over the world.

3. Olympic athletes exercise excellence

Born deaf and had a speech impairment, Tamika Catchings grew up being teased for her disabilities. Apart from the ridicule she suffered while in school, her life became harder when her parents divorced.

Even so, Catchings set her mind on the thing she loves the most, excelling in her studies and playing basketball. She went on to play for the Indiana Fever of the US Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) as a prolific scorer with admirable professional ethic. In the 2004 and 2008 Olympics, her team won the gold medals. A role model for women, Catchings is a six-time WNBA All Star and is the President of the WNBA Players Association.

4. Olympic athletes tirelessly take action

The seventh of eleven children, James Cleveland “Jesse” Owens worked different jobs to help his parents earn extra income for the family. Even at a young age, Owens already knew what he wanted – to become a professional athlete. In high school, Owens practiced running before school starts and then goes on to work in a shoe repair shop after his classes.

As a result of his persistence, Owens moved on from representing his school in competitions to earning a slot in the 1936 Summer Olympics in Germany, where he won four gold medals: for the 100 meters, 200 meters, long jump, and as part of the 4×100 meter relay team. Considered the most successful athlete in 1936, he became the first black male to be sponsored by global brand Adidas. The Jesse Owens Award is America’s highest award for the year’s best track and field athlete, named in honor of Owens’ significant career and legacy.

***

Let the words of Olympic athletes ignite your spirit

“I wouldn’t say anything is impossible. I think that everything is possible as long as you put your mind to it and put the work and time into it.” (Michael Phelps, world’s newest record holder for the most Olympic gold medals, 19 in total)

“When anyone tells me I can’t do anything, I’m just not listening anymore.” (Florence Griffith-Joyner, gold medalist in athletics in 1988 and silver medalist in 1988 and 1984)

“I am building a fire, and everyday I train, I add more fuel. At just the right moment, I light the match.” (Mia Hamm, gold medalist in women’s football in 2004 and 1996 and silver medalist in 2000)

“The first thing is to love your sport. Never do it to please someone else. It has to be yours.” (Peggy Fleming, gold medalist in figure skating in 1968)

“It’s all about the journey, not the outcome.” (Carl Lewis, gold medalist in athletics in 1996, 1992, 1988 and 1984 and silver medalist in 1988)

“Each of us has a fire in our hearts for something. It’s our goal in life to find it and keep it lit.” (Mary Lou Retton, gold, silver and bronze medalist in gymnastics in 1984)

“Nothing can substitute for just plain hard work.” (Andre Agassi, gold medalist in tennis in 1996)

“Never underestimate the power of dreams and the influence of the human spirit. We are all the same in this notion: The potential for greatness lives within each of us.” (Wilma Rudolph, gold medalist in athletics in 1960 and bronze medalist in 1956)

“You have to believe in yourself when no one else does — that makes you a winner right there.” (Venus Williams, gold medalist in tennis in 2008 and 2000)

“I’ve missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. Twenty-six times, I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.” (Michael Jordan, gold medalist in basketball in 1992 and 1984)

“Focus, discipline, hard work, goal setting and, of course, the thrill of finally achieving your goals. These are all lessons in life”. (Kristi Yamaguchi, gold medalist in figure skating in 1992)

“Never put an age limit on your dreams.” (Dara Torres, gold medalist in swimming in 2000, 1992 and 1984, silver medalist in 2008 and 1988 and bronze medalist in 2000 and 1988)

Each one of us has our own race to win – dreams, goals, aspirations. Decide what is yours, take action and keep the fire burning. Believe that you can win!
